Kieri Olmstead, founder of Simple Empathy and licensed marriage and family therapist

Kieri Olmstead

I help people hold complexity - in themselves, in their relationships, and in the systems we're all tangled in. Because healing doesn't happen in isolation. It happens in relationship.

Core Philosophy

As the founder of Simple Empathy, I’m committed to creating spaces where people feel truly seen, valued, and empowered to reclaim their stories.

Therapy should be a place where you get to be your full, unfiltered self — because if you can’t be real in a space designed for healing, then what the hell is the point?

Specialities & Approach

My foundation is in feminist theory and anti-oppressive practice — but that doesn’t mean I only see the pain of women. I also see how patriarchy wounds men, locking them in cages of stoicism, anger, and emotional isolation. I hold both truths at once: that women are exhausted from carrying too much, and that many men were never given the tools to carry anything at all.

Yes, I lean politically progressive — but I don’t confuse politics with personhood.

I’ve sat with Republican men in work trucks and liberal women in burnout spirals, and I’ve helped them both find the real issue beneath the talking points.

My approach is both challenging and compassionate — rooted in systems awareness, relational depth, and deep presence. I speak the language of emotional nuance and direct clarity. I can hold tension without rushing to fix it. And I can meet people — men, women, and everyone outside and in between — with both softness and spine.

For Women in Relationships with Men

You’ve tried everything. You’ve explained your needs, swallowed your frustration, and maybe even googled “emotional labor” at midnight just to feel less alone.

And still — he doesn’t seem to get it.

If you’re tired of doing the work for both of you, send him here. Not because he’s broken — but because this matters. And you shouldn’t have to carry it alone.

For Men in Relationships with Women

You don’t know what changed. One day things seemed fine — and now everything feels tense, distant, or one wrong word away from an argument. You’re not a bad guy.

But something’s not working, and you’re not sure why.

That’s where I come in. This isn’t about blame. It’s about learning to hear what’s really being said — and showing up in a way that actually works.

For Couples Trying to Figure it Out

You still love each other.

But somewhere along the way, the connection got tangled.

Now every conversation feels loaded —

and even the small stuff leads to big fights or long silences.

You’re not failing.

You’re human.

There’s a way back to each other — one that doesn’t involve picking sides or keeping score. I can help you find it.

Clinical Supervision

As a clinical supervisor, I guide emerging therapists in developing their own therapeutic voice while staying grounded in ethics, cultural humility, and justice-oriented care. This work takes heart. Grit. The ability to hold space for the heaviest shit people carry without losing yourself in the process. My job is to make sure my clinicians have space to grow, fuck up, learn, and do better — because that’s how we evolve.

Personal Thread

Beyond the therapy room, my life is beautifully chaotic.

I’m a mother to a wild, wise pre-teen daughter and a pack of three ridiculous dogs and three equally demanding cats. (Yes, it’s as loud as it sounds.)

You’ll usually find me curled up with a book on Sundays or outside in the dirt, coaxing things to grow.

And if I’m not in a session, I’m likely elbows-deep in one of the many side projects I pour my heart into — building community, making meaning, and doing whatever I can to bring more healing into the world in ways that feel honest and alive.

Life is messy. Healing is messy. But we don’t have to do it alone. And around here? You don’t have to pretend it’s anything else.

Eliot at Simple Empathy and Kieri Olmstead's dog

Whether you're the one holding all the emotional weight —

or the one who just realized something's off but can't name it —

you're in the right place.

This isn’t about blame.

It’s about repair.

And I can help you get there.

"Your nervous system is sacred. Your softness is not a flaw. You were never meant to do this alone."
